Buyers of Georgetown TX homes will be able to enjoy more amenities at San Gabriel Park in the coming months, including an expanded trail for walking, jogging and biking. The near half-mile concrete trail will be extended thanks to a $200,000 grant Georgetown has received from the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department.
Katy Crossing residents will now have easy access to the trail since the expansion will run from the park along the San Gabriel River to the community.
Enhancing the Texas Park Experience
The award is part of a state program that has allocated $3.46 million to help improve a number of recreational areas in Texas.
The trail expansion is estimated to cost about $2.5 million and its design is being developed by Austin’s RVi Planning and Landscape Architecture.
Construction will be overseen by Weststar Construction, a development company based in Georgetown, and is scheduled to begin in early 2018.
The expansion consists of features that enhance the trail’s functionality and security. New fencing and signage are included in the development plans as well as bridges and drinking fountains to enhance the experience of the park’s visitors.
The trail expansion represents the completion of the San Gabriel Park’s second phase of scheduled improvements. Groundbreaking for the first phase began in March of this year after being announced by Georgetown officials.
Other projects related to the park’s improvements include the restoration of its spring habitat, the addition of a new “sensory walk” playground, and improved entry points and signs that help visitors make their way around the park.
The park will experience improvements in its parking availability and roadways. Existing park features and drainage systems will be upgraded, and new pavilions and restrooms will be added as well.
Supporting the Growth of Georgetown Communities
Funding for the $2.5 million project was approved in 2008 by voters participating in that year’s bond election, and the park is scheduled to stay open while the project is completed.
San Gabriel Park is one of the many scenic parks in Texas. The Texas Recreation and Parks Society designated it as a Lone Star Legacy Park in 2012, highlighting its historical role in the growth and prosperity of its surrounding communities.
The park features picnic areas for families to enjoy among oak trees that are over 200 years old along with open spaces that accommodate festivals, concerts, and sporting activities.
There are trails for biking and hiking, and visitors are easily connected to nearby Rivery and Blue Hole parks as well as Lake Georgetown.
The $200,000 trail grant is just one example of the ongoing growth that continues in Georgetown TX. Homes in the surrounding areas give residents the opportunity to take advantage of local parks and participate in a wide range of activities.
